Description

The E9#5 is an altered dominant chord and is usually played in one of the two movable shapes depending on the most fitting position on the fretboard (it's also sometimes played with the root on the 4th string as a rootless voicing).

Chord structure

The chord consists of five notes. The notes represent the root, major third, augmented fifth, minor seventh and ninth intervals. Notice that the third is sometimes omitted.

Chord name

E9#5 is an abbreviation for E dominant ninth with a sharpened fifth. Other abbreviations are E9(#5) and E9+5. Notice that the chord also can be named as E9b13.
