Ab is common in major contexts, while G#m is generally preferred over Abm in minor contexts.
Ab is commonly used in major contexts in practical music notation. Ab major belongs naturally to common flat keys and is widely used in chord charts, lead sheets, jazz harmony, and piano-based music because it is easy to read and fits naturally within flat-based harmonic settings.
In minor contexts, however, Ab minor is much less common, because it leads to awkward spellings such as Cb and Fb. For this reason, musicians usually prefer G#m rather than Abm in minor harmony.
