F# minor key chords
The key of F# minor can be connected to seven chords, built from each of the notes in the key. Although more expanded chords can be added, these are the main chords to keep record of. The tables below lists chords that are part of this key.
The first table shows the relationship of all triads in the F# minor key. The roman numerals indicate scale degrees as well as describe chord functions.

As could be seen consists minor keys of three minor and three major chords plus one diminished chord.
Note that F# minor is relative to A major and these keys include the same chords. Since there are two minor scales besides the Natural minor, Melodic and Harmonic minor, the F# minor key can also include chords that normally aren't connected to A major.
Basic F#m chord progressions
Here are examples with progressions based on the F#m key including triads:
F#m - E - Bm
F#m - A - E
D - E - F#m
Bm - A - F#m
A - C#m - F#m
The typical way to start and/or end the progression is with the i chord.

Note that the diminished triad now becomes a half-diminished chord (ii7b5) and that the VII7 is a dominant seventh chord in addition to the extended minor and major chords.

Here are some examples with progressions based on the F#m key including chords from the table above mixed with some triads:

F#m7 - D - Amaj7 - E
Amaj7 - Bm7 - C#m7 - F#m7
Melodic and Harmonic F# minor
The melodic and harmonic scales can also be used as a foundation for chord progressions.

Note that the composition of chords now includes one augmented chord and two diminished chords. These chord types are less convenient for creating chord progressions.
One example with progression based on the F# Melodic is:
G#m - C# - B - F#m

In this case, the composition of chords involves one augmented chord and two diminished chords. Once again, this chord collection are less convenient for building progression compared to chord based on the natural minor.
