G# is commonly used in minor contexts, but much less often in major ones.
In major contexts, musicians usually prefer Ab major over G#. G# major is theoretically awkward because it requires spellings such as B# and Fx (F double sharp).
In minor contexts, however, G# minor fits naturally with common sharp-based keys such as B major and E major and avoids the awkward spellings that would appear in Ab minor, such as Cb and Fb.
