Play through tons of progressions and get familiar with concepts and chord progression theory. Start with the chord names, then optionally turn on fretting diagrams. If you play long sessions, optionally turn on black background. While light background and dark text is generally easier to read, especially in daylight, dark background may feel more comfortable in darker environments.

Concerning tags such as "pop", "rock" and "funk", how much it sounds like these genres is of course not only a question of the chords involved, but also rhythm and perhaps techniques used. From the same progression, fingerpicking may resemble a ballad whereas intensive down strokes will create something close to hard rock. The sound is a sum of all these, with chords as a fundamental ingredient. Also, the outcome of a nylon guitar will not be the same as an electric guitar with boost and distortion.
